Fruit and vegetable exports may exceed USD 4 billion in 2023

 

In the first 5 months of 2023, the total export value of vegetables and fruits reached 1.97 billion USD, up 39% over the same period last year. Fruit and vegetable exports are forecasted to be very optimistic this year, possibly exceeding $4 billion. In particular, durian is forecasted to join the export group of over 1 billion USD.

Fruit and vegetable exports upbeat

According to the Import and Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade), the export value of Vietnam’s vegetables and fruits in May 2023 reached 600 million USD, up 137.7% over the same period last year. With a record export level in May 2023, the total export value of fruits and vegetables in the first five months of 2023 reached US$1.97 billion, up 39% over the same period last year. It is worth mentioning that, in 1.97 billion USD, the turnover from durian export accounts for nearly 10%.

In the “bright spot” of export growth of vegetables and fruits, durian exports increased by 573.1% over the same period last year, reaching 190.5 million USD. Durian exports are mainly to the Chinese market, with a value accounting for 84.3% of the total durian export value.

Talking to PV Lao Dong, Mr. Nguyen Quang Hoa – General Director of Duong Vu Rice could not hide the joy in his voice: “Durian export is showing a lot of positive signals, so since a few months now I have focused on durian trade.” .

Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen – Chairman of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association – said that currently, at the peak of harvesting many fruits of Vietnam such as: jackfruit, durian, lychee…, every day there are hundreds of trucks carrying fresh fruit to the border gates of Lang Son, in which the volume of trucks carrying durian accounts for a large proportion (durian is mainly exported through Huu Nghi – Lang Son border gate).

“It is forecasted that this year’s fruit and vegetable exports of Vietnam may reach the $4 billion mark,” said Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen optimistically.

According to the Plant Protection Department (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development – Agriculture and Rural Development), from the beginning of June 2023, the Department has coordinated with plant quarantine experts of the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries to inspect and assess Price of the system to treat fresh lychees exported to Japan with Methyl Bromide of 2 facilities in Hai Huong province and 1 facility in North province. All 3 processing facilities are recognized by the Japanese side and can immediately process the fresh lychees exported to Japan as planned. 

Moreover, recently, Vietnam’s durian export has just received more good news when the Chinese Customs has approved 47 more planting area codes and 18 packing facilities that meet export requirements.

Accordingly, our country has 293 growing areas and 115 durian packing facilities of Vietnam that have been granted official export codes by China to this market.

Talking to PV Lao Dong, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Hoang Trung emphasized: “This is a very good signal and hopefully in the near future the number of planting area codes, packing facilities as well as the quality of these codes. Since then, we will not only be able to meet the demand in terms of quantity, but also in terms of quality, and sustainably maintain the export of derived agricultural products in the near future.”

Bringing trade in agricultural products between Vietnam and China to a new height

Dang Phuc Nguyen forecasted that, with the signing of the protocol between the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vietnam and the General Department of Customs of China, along with the promotion of the issuance of planting area codes and packing facilities, durian exports are increasing. favorable. It is forecasted that in 2023, durian can “join” the export group of over 1 billion USD. 

Currently, there are 11 kinds of Vietnamese fruits that are officially exported to China, including: mango, dragon fruit, banana, longan, lychee, watermelon, rambutan, jackfruit, mangosteen, passion fruit and durian. According to the Department of Trade Promotion (XTTM – Ministry of Industry and Trade), China is considered the largest, most important and potential export market for Vietnam’s fresh fruit.

Within the framework of the ASEAN-China Free Trade Agreement (ACFTA), so far, China has reduced taxes on more than 8,000 items imported from Vietnam, including fresh fruits, opening up many opportunities for businesses. businesses (DN) to access this large market.
