In mid-March, durian was considered “the best in the world” (unshelled) grown in Vietnam for 700,000 VND per kg but now only 300,000 VND.
On the Musang King durian trade association, shop owners race to sell this fruit with the advertised price as “unprecedentedly cheap”: 200,000-300,000 VND per kilogram (whole fruit), while durian rice costs 700,000-750,000 VND .
At a fruit shop on Hai Ba Trung Street, District 1 (HCMC), each 300 gram durian box sells for 200,000 VND, customers buy 1 kg for only 600,000 VND.
“In the past 3 days, the price of this type has dropped sharply, so I sell 2-3 quintals each time. Compared to March, the number of durian imports has increased four times,” said an employee at this store.
For 5 years in the durian business, Ms. Loan, the owner of an online fruit store in District 8, has never seen this type of fruit as cheap as this year. Each kilo of peeled durian is only VND 600,000-650,000, halving compared to early March and 40% lower than imported goods.
2 years ago, Musang King had to order a whole week to have it for sale, this year when the goods are in full season, the supply in the western provinces is abundant, she said “order every day”.
The record of VnExpress shows that the selling price of Musang King at the garden house ranges from 130,000-150,000 VND per kg.
Ms. Oanh, owner of Musang King garden in Can Tho, said that she had just sold 1 ton for 150,000 VND. This price has decreased by 40% compared to the cut in April, but according to Ms. Oanh, it is still very profitable.
According to Mr. Dang Manh Khuong, a focal point specializing in selling durians in Can Tho, compared to mid-March, the price of durian has decreased by about 50-70%, depending on the type, mainly because of the abundant supply.
Durian varieties in the West are in full bloom, including Musang King. In addition, China’s reduction in purchasing volume led to a mass of goods in the markets, pushing the price of durians of all kinds to a low level, making it difficult for Musang King to compete. Currently, Musang King is only equivalent to the price of Grade A organic Ri6 durian sold on the market.
Musang King originates from Malaysia, has been experimentally planted and fruited by people in the Central Highlands and Mekong Delta for three years. They are being sold in many fruit stores in Ho Chi Minh City, Can Tho, and Hanoi. Compared to previous years, this year Musang King’s output increased by 3-5 times.
This fruit is oval, not too large, weighs 2-4 kg. The pods are dark green and have very large spines. This species is characterized by a groove in the middle of the left stem and the left body. The bottom left side clearly shows 5 big and thick packs.
