Super sweet corn variety SSW18 by the research team of the Vietnam Academy of Agriculture is milky white in color, soft, sweeter than fruit, and can be eaten immediately without being processed.
Talking with Tuoi Tre Online , Ms. Vu Thi Bich Hanh – Head of Upland Crop Research Department, Institute of Crop Research and Development, Vietnam Academy of Agriculture – was pleased to say that the research team had successfully grown super corn. sweet (SSW18).
According to Ms. Hanh, the super sweet corn variety SSW18 is also known as fruit corn because it is milky white, soft, peeled and the sweetness ranges from 17.5 to 18.5 degrees Brix. The dark sweet seeds are similar to ripe fruits like watermelon and can be eaten fresh directly after being picked from the tree, without having to undergo any processing such as boiling, steaming, or baking.
In particular, super sweet corn is selected and bred by traditional sexual hybridization method, so users do not need to worry like other genetically modified corn varieties. Besides, because it is grown for direct consumption, this organic corn is not sprayed with pesticides and pesticides.
“Our target audience is people who want to experience healthy products for health or experience travel. Corn can be milled to make juice, milk, smoothies… SSW18 corn is supplemented with beta carotene, vitamins…”, she shared.
This super sweet corn variety continues to be researched, perfected the production process, selected high-tech farming areas to improve corn quality, sweetness and good resistance to pests and diseases.
Through many trials, super sweet corn SSW18 grows healthy and fast. The time from planting to harvesting fresh corn is 70-80 days depending on the region, planting season, and weather. The yield of fresh corn is 10-12 tons/ha. In fact, the group is developing this fruit corn variety in highland, cool climates such as Moc Chau (Son La), Sapa, Bac Ha (Lao Cai)…
“These are traditional corn growing areas, well developed tourism, poverty alleviation and can become a local specialty crop,” said Ms. Hanh.
In addition, the researchers believe that by being self-sufficient in corn varieties, technology and production processes, Vietnam will be less dependent on imports of corn and sugar from the Philippines, the US, and Thailand.
According to the research team of the Vietnam Academy of Agriculture, SSW18 corn as a fruit, helps to supplement many essential nutrients and digestible fiber, suitable for all ages, without losing nutrients due to lack of nutrients. Processing.
