1 Harvest and storage

1.1  Harvest

Dragon fruit should be harvested within 30 – 32 days after blooming for the best quality and longer storage.

Harvest in the early morning or late afternoon, avoid harsh sunlight shining directly on the fruit, increasing the temperature in the fruit, losing water quickly, affecting the quality and storage time.

Pick the fruit with sharp pruning shears, when the fruit is cut, put it in a plastic basket, keep it in a cool place, immediately transport it home and pack it as soon as possible, don’t leave it for a long time in the garden.

Do not put the fruit on the ground while picking to avoid fungal infection

Do not overfill the basket when transporting, cover the basket with paper and leaves carefully, avoid sunlight and damage in the event of a collision.

1.2. Preserve

With a temperature of 5oC, 90% humidity, combined with a polyethylene bag with 20-30 holes perforated with a sewing needle and sealed bag, dragon fruit can be kept fresh for 40-50 days. At 28oC and 70% humidity, the storage time is only one week.

2 Standard export dragon fruit

The commercial quality of dragon fruit is due to the attractive color and shape of the dragon fruit. Therefore, to meet the export standards of dragon fruit, it is necessary to meet the following standards:

– Weight of fruit: depending on the import market:

+ European market: 250-300g/fruit

+ China market: 400-600g/fruit

+ Singapore market: 300-500g/fruit

+ Hong Kong market: > 400g/fruit

The fruit is not damaged by fungi or insects.

– The fruit is clean, beautiful shape, the skin is red evenly over 70% of the fruit area and is smooth. The nasal cavity is not more than 1cm deep and the fruit has no protruding nose.

– Ears are straight, hard, green and over 1.5cm long (for the Chinese market, the longer the better the better)

The flesh of the fruit is white and hard, the seeds are black.

The fruit has no mechanical damage or bruising and no green spots or burns due to sun or chemical spraying.
